This is Dorian Pavus

Dorian was born as the heir and scion to the illustrious House Pavus of the ancient, decadent, and slowly crumbling Tevinter Imperium. His father, Halward Pavus, a powerful mage and holder of the family's seat in the magisterium, had great plans for his son -- eventualy reaching all the way to Archon.

Unfortunately, Dorian didn't exactly fit the mold of the perfect mage. Despite having the looks, the wit, the intellect, and more magical talent than his entire class at the Carastes Academy, Dorian did not fit in well. His homeland had a habit of hating what was different, of finding it aberrant and unlawful and Dorian's attraction to men was definitely enough to have him labeled as such.

After being subjected to imprisonment and an interrupted attempt to use blood magic to change his very nature by his parents, Dorian fled Tevinter and went south, eventually joining the Inquisition after the maddest of his countrymen decided to throw in with an ancient Magister who opened a whole in the sky. It would have all been grim and upsetting except for Inquisitor Taran Trevelyan.

Taran who was the other half of his soul. Of course, with the two of them together the day was saved and they lived happily ever after.

Now he is Daniel Tsai

Daneil's parents moved to New York City before he was born to manage the international corporate offices of one of the wealthiest private banks in Taiwan, and they were established and successful by the time he came along. Truly, wildly wealthy. They expected a great deal from their son, and he was sent to the finest boarding schools and preparatory academies in the United States. With genius level IQ and a fascination with theoretical physics and maths, he was accepted to Columbia at the age of 16 and had finished his first two degrees by the time he was twenty.

His parents, unhappy with the academic bent their son seemed to be taking, spending all his time working on equations that described the fabric of reality instead of global financial markets, decided that before he could go to graduate school he needed to return "home" to Taipei and work for his grandfather for a year.

He did not have a great time. The work was tedious, his Chinese wasn't as good as he thought it was, and he was more isolated than he'd been in a long time. He took to going out with cousins and their friends and getting into trouble in order to make the time pass. Too much alcohol, too many drugs, and then one very incriminating cellphone picture of him with another young man's hands down his pants brought it all to a screeching halt.

He was sent home to NYC (a relief even if he was in disgrace) and has gotten a small (expensive) apartment and is currently working on his graduate school applications and trying to pick up the pieces and get his life back in order. His parents haven't cut him off yet, but that's a definite possibility if they have reason to suspect he isn't behaving. By both his parents' standards and his own, he is struggling with feelings of failure and is honestly ashamed of some of the stuff that went on in Taiwan while he was mid bender.

Daniel is nearly 23, living alone in the East Village, trying to find his footing
